Walking Into Recovery Month September 20,2014 One Step At A Time. By Carol Harblin, Rockin’ Reporter;

We have seen beloved characters in movies fall to drug addiction, like Jenny in Forrest Gump. She leaves her lifelong best friend and son in her wake. To see anyone fall to addiction is heartbreaking.

Addiction does not discriminate age, class, or money. In February of 2014, Philip Seymour Hoffman died of a drug overdose at the age of 46 years old. This August of the same year, his co-star from the movie Patch Adams, Robin Willliams died tragically at the hand of major depression and suicide at another young age of 63 years old.

Rockers In Recovery’s (RIR) upcoming concert is September 20, 2014, in The Philly Recovery Walk. It is a combined effort between RIR and Pro-Act Recovery Walk.

There were 20,000 people in attendance in 2013, and this year RIR’s goal is to break that record and have at least 30,000 participants in the Recovery Walk in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The concerts are much more than music, it is coming together to gain awareness, education, and unconditional support among everyone. RIR is not just for those who are battling addictions, but for everyone who knows addiction in anyone they love.

Recovery Month This year, the Pro-Act Recovery Walk and RIR Concert is at the Great Plaza in Penn’s landing on the waterfront. The walk route will wind through the historic Philadelphia, near Independence Hall.

RIR is about sober fun and music. The organization heavily involves a variety of musical contributors to carry the message of hope and sober fun through music, but RIR is much more than even music. RIR as a whole surpasses guitars and singers, it is a fellowship of all people who are in recovery from chemical dependency as well as family and friend supporters of those walking the program.

Recovery is an extremely difficult journey. Just because someone has 25 or 30 years in recovery doesn’t make them in the clear for life of sobriety. Recovery is work, just like life. It can be grueling and messy, but with the steadfast and unconditional support it is manageable and survivable. Whether someone has depression, an eating disorder, or a drug addiction, it is all manageable with unconditional support and love.

Make this year’s Recovery Walk bigger than last year by showing up to support, walk, and rock among people who want to make a difference while being clean and sober. RIR is a sober fellowship of camaraderie, support and hope. It brings together all walks of like with a similar addiction journey. RIR welcomes ALL people who choose to live a sober and clean lifestyle with the support of similar people who resonate and rock at the same frequency.

Robin Williams once said, “I used to think the worst thing in life is to end up all alone. It’s not. The worst thing in life is to end up with people who make you feel all alone,” and RIR’s mission is to never let anyone feel alone.

Even those who are supporters of those who are recovering from addiction need support. Just because some people look strong and smile often doesn’t mean they are stronger than the person who is crying. The louder someone laughs, the more they may be crying on the inside, just as the quieter someone is the more devastated the person may be feeling. RIR is the organization that brings all that support together where nobody should feel alone and left out.

The RIR events are an experience of a lifetime and is encouraged for everyone to be part of any and all the concerts RIR puts on because it is a time when support and love is limitless and in full abundance. We are all survivors of life and we are all recovering from some addiction or issue. RIR is a chemical-free organization with a brother and sisterhood support.

Where were Philip Seymour Hoffman’s and Robin Williams support? They both appeared to have it all plus the American dream, but truth be told, they were both carrying lifelong battles of addiction and depression. Money and fame doesn’t make a person’s recovery, it is always the unshakable support of loved ones that make the difference.

With addiction running rampant throughout the world, taking countless victims with it, the Recovery Walk in Philadelphia, September 20, 2014 is vital for the education and awareness of addiction to future generations.
